Family therapy: Families with differently abled members

It's often difficult to deal with a diagnosis of a family member or child who is differently abled. Marian Maynard is the parent of an adult with cerebral palsy and mentally disabled and understands those difficulties.
Marian offers both in-home and office therapy and consultation to assist with issues related to guilt, grief/loss and how to deal with the everyday living issues. For those who can't come to Marian's office, she offers in-home visits. These visits can help you cope with the many emotions, feelings and also practical issues you face on a daily basis.
Several of the diagnoses that Marian works with are Cerebral Palsy and Asperger's/Autism Continuum. Marian explains, "When we have been given a diagnosis of such magnitude, it is as if we thought we were on a plane trip to California and when the doors open, we see that we have arrived in Florida-we are pushed into another world without warning. In leaving the doctor's office or hospital, there are no maps or guidelines to assist the overwhelming challenges we face ahead. Much of the work involves multi-level appointments with specialists, nurses, physical therapy, and in each episode we are overwhelmed with stories and scenes of similar burdens."
It is a hero's or heroine's journey of departure from the life of mainstream life into the mystery of both pain and wonder. Everything can be said to be born from the dark. Most importantly, even a new way to love and see the world and that what we learn from the angels in our lives.
